Progesterone

The hormone progesterone is created in the adrenal glands of men and women, in men’s testicles and women’s ovaries. Known as the “hormone of pregnancy”, progesterone is responsbible for maintaining a pregnancy. It also determines the timing and functioning of the menstrual cycle, stimulates bone cell production, protects the body against nerve cell damage, and promotes energy production in the brain. As women and men get older and reach their forties, progesterone levels decrease. For women, at this stage in life, progesterone deficiency is often accompanied by symptoms of of either declining levels or, on the other hand, estrogen dominance.

Symptoms of Progesterone Deficiency:

  • Infertility
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Very heavy periods
  • Low bone density
  • PMS (Premenstrual syndrome
  • Night sweats
  • Miscarriages
  • Weight gain
  • Weepiness
  • Swollen extremities
  • Water retention
  • Headaches at the beginning of your period
  • Painful abdomen
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Aggression
  • Painful, tender, swollen breasts

By the same token, if you are supplementing with bioidentical hormones, if your dosage of progesterone is not correct and is too high for your needs, you can suffer the same symptoms. What we are trying to achieve with bioidentical hormone supplementation is a balancing of the hormone levels in your body. This is the reason that once you start bioidentical hormone therapy, your doctor should repeat a hormone panel after a couple of months to see if your hormone levels are balanced. If you start to have unwelcoming symptoms while on bioidentical hormone supplementation, you should have your hormone levels checked immediately. Blood or saliva testing is the way that hormone levels are verified.

It should not be forgotten that a healthy lifestyle, diet, exercise, getting enough sleep and reducing stress levels will also affect your hormone levels, your health and wellbeing.
