Biomimetic Hormone Supplementation with the Wiley Protocol
The Wiley Protocol is the use of plant derived bioidentical hormones in a biomimetic manner for the treatment for menopause symptoms. Biomimetic hormone supplementation uses these natural bioidentical hormones to replicate or mimic the cyclical hormonal rhythms in the body of a young woman at reproductive age. These creams which are dispensed in pre-measured differing doses served in syringes, made up by compounding pharmacists and applied to the skin on different areas of the body. Created by T.S. “Susie” Wiley, an anthropologist, endocrine researcher and author of two books, “Sex, Lies and Menopause” and “Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar and Survival”, it is clearly an option to be seriously considered by medical practitioners and patients alike.
The Wiley Protocol, developed with the assistance of an oncologist and much research, uses the natural bioidentical hormones progesterone and estradiol in differing amounts over the course of a 28 day cycle allowing for a menstrual period to take place at the end of the cycle. This method differs from the static dosing of bioidentical hormones used by many women today who do not want to use chemical hormones such as Premarin to deal with menopausal symptoms.
Taking bioidentical hormones in a biomimetical, rhythmic manner according to the Wiley Protocol, has established a new battlefield in the world of hormone replacement therapy and women’s health. It is certainly controversial. There are supporters such as Suzanne Somers, actress and author of the books “The Sexy Years” and “Ageless” who use this method of BHRT and sings praises to the Wiley Protocol and detractors such as the WileyWatch.org and the medical establishment which has always been critical of natural bioidentical hormone replacement. The chief criticism of the Wiley Protocol is the dosing with such high levels of hormones that could be dangerous. The obvious problem with this criticism is the lack of research that has been done in this arena. It is a difficult thing to criticize when you have nothing to back up your criticism.
Whether the Wiley Protocol works or not for women depends on many personal individual factors, including stress levels and lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise, smoking and alcohol consumption. Lifestyle factors such as these can influence hormone levels in negative or positive ways. One compounding pharmacist we interviewed said three of his clients had tried the Wiley Protocol. Two of the three women did not report successful results. All women we have encountered who are using bioidentical hormones have nothing but positive things to say about how bioidentical hormones solved their symptoms of menopause. Ask these women if they tried the chemical hormones and many of them had and they talked about how awful their experiences had been whilst taking them.
To obtain the Wiley Protocol, one must find a certified compounding pharmacist and a doctor certified in the Wiley Protocol to obtain the specially formulated and dosed creams.
The jury is still out on the Wiley Protocol and Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy. It is our opinion that both BHRT and the Biomimetic Hormone Supplementation of the Wiley Protocol should be seriously studied and researched on the continent of North America. Compounding pharmacies are making bioidentical formulas; women are using them and demand that this research be done. Women need and deserve the best that is available in health care especially for that difficult period in life known as menopause.

The Wiley Protocol has been a nightmare for the majority of the women trying it. The super high progesterone dosing has wrecked many women’s hormone receptors because the half life of progesterone is much longer than previously believed.
Also, Wiley has been discredited for fabricating her credentials and has been sued many times.
Her presence in the bioidentical community reflects badly on the clinicians who are still using her hormones.
