Estrogen
Three different hormones: estriol, estrone and estradol actually make up the hormone Estrogen. It is produced in the adrenal glands, fat cells, ovaries and in the placenta during pregnancy. Both men and women have estrogen within them. Estrogen is the hormone which gives women their female characteristics of breasts, body hair and fat distribution. Estrogen also regulates menstruation, fertility and menopause. It is responsible for the growth of the female reproductive system and keeps the tissues and organs including the breasts, urinary tract, uterus and blood vessels healthy.
For men and women, around the age of 40, hormone levels begin to change and decrease. This can be corrected by replenishing hormones with bioidentical hormones to restore equilibrium, reducing one’s exposure to xenoestrogens, eating a healthy diet and following an exercise program. At this stage in life, women can suffer from either too little estrogen or symptoms of estrogen dominance.
The symptoms of estrogen dominance include: depression, weight gain, anxiety, breast tenderness, headaches, migraines, digestive issues, fuzzy thinking, and irregular periods. However, these symptoms can also be indicative of the opposite condition of estrogen deficiency. The problem during perimenopause (the stage of life before menopause) is also related to declining levels of progesterone. This situation is created by exposure to xenoestrogen toxins in the environment which then lead to estrogen dominance.
Xenoestrogens are to be found in pesticides, plastics, chemicals and in food in the form of growth hormones in livestock and poultry. Xenoestrogens damage the immune system and create hormonal imbalance. This will also cause low sperm counts in men, infertility in both men and women and early onset of puberty in children. Xenoestrogens act like estrogens in the body by disrupting the endocrine system and affect all of us.
