Bioidentical Hormones

Bioidentical or biomimetic hormones are defined as biologically identical to what the human body produces. The molecular structure is exactly the same as the molecular structure of hormones manufactured in the body. They come from plant sources such as: soy, wild yam and other plant extracts and synthesized in a lab to replicate the hormones in the body.

For over 50 years, bioidentical hormones have been safely used in Europe for the treatment of menopause. They are not chemical synthetic drugs like Premarin which comes from pregnant mare’s urine and then prescribed in a one dose fits all regimen. The use of Premarin gives side effects such as of bloatedness, low libido, brittle bones and depression, not to mention the serious consequences of blood clots, heart attack, stroke and breast cancer. The big and powerful pharmaceutical companies have no interest in bioidentical hormones because they are not able to patent the mixtures and generate huge profits. The pharmaceutical companies have marketed their synthetic hormones to women, chemicals now proven to be dangerous to women’s health, first revealed by a study known as the Women’s Health Initiative in 2002.

It can be difficult to find a doctor who is knowledgeable enough on menopause and hormones to be able to prescribe bioidentical hormones. Doctors with this training will be able to monitor your hormone levels and your progress. If you are having trouble finding a doctor with these skills, a good source for locating a doctor is a compounding pharmacy. Your individual bioidentical hormone prescription will be made by a compounding pharmacy.

At your first visit to a doctor who works with bio-identical hormones, you will either have a hormone panel done first to check your hormone levels or they will prescribe an estrogen mixture such a tri-est or bi-est, progesterone cream depending on your symptoms and then see how your symptoms are in a couple of months. You will apply these bioidentical creams cyclically to mimic your natural cycle before the onset of menopause symptoms.
