Biomimetic Hormones | Perimenopause

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the word used to describe the time leading up to menopause which can start 10 to 15 years before actual menopause. The average age for the onset of menopause is approximately 51 years of age but it can occur sooner or later than that average age. Perimenopause can occur in women as young as 35 years old. At this time, your body is changing and producing a decreased amount of the sex hormones: progesterone, estrogen and testosterone. However, it is also possible that a woman could be producing more estrogen leading to a situation of estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance can by corrected with the natural bioidentical / biomimetic hormone progesterone. Whatever the hormones levels are, the hormones are becoming more imbalanced which leads to other health problems.

The following is a list of physical and emotional symptoms which can be present in perimenopause, most of which are due to fluctuating hormone levels:

  • Menstrual changes – periods become sporadic, some months are without a period or blood flow can be heavier or lighter
  • hot flashes or night sweats
  • Unexplained weight gain – especially around the waist area as the body begins producing less estrogen
  • Mood changes – depression, anxiety, irritability and mood swings
  • Vaginal dryness – caused by decreased levels of estrogen
  • Urinary problems causing increased urinary tract problems
  • Loss of libido due to hormonal changes – declining levels of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA
  • Sleep problems due to hormonal fluctuations which cause hot flashes and night sweats
